The Chautauqua Program

Day 1 - Friday, 6th October

Bike Society Anzac Highway to McLaren Vale

Distance: 49.41 km, Climbing: 404m

Day 1 will commence with a coffee and lunch at Bike Society Anzac Highway before we commence our roll down the coast.

This ride takes in some great coast line, making our way through the beachside suburbs until we reach the Coast to Vines rail trail which will take us inland to McLaren Vale. This is a gently undulating ride with no big climbs but a couple of short sharp pinches as we make our way down the coast.

Plenty of great photo opportunities and spots to explore along the way.

Optional extra kms, time and legs permitting

Distance: 42.81 km, Climbing: 570m

For those that still feel like they need a little more on day 1 and if time permits, this option provides a steady loop and climb up Wickham’s hill. There a plenty of options around this area and this ride and it’s duration will fully depend on time and the individuals after some more riding. For everyone else there is of course the swimming pool at the hotel……….

Day 2 - Saturday, 7th October

Long option – McLaren Vale to Strathalbyn, return via Macclesfield

Distance: 103.37 km, Climbing: 1330m

This ride commences with a flat roll to Willunga where we then get to tackle the infamous Willunga Hill climb (stage 5 of the Tour Down Under each year). The worst of this climb is in the first 500m and then it settles out to a nice steady gradient.Fear not, it’s not an overly long or difficult climb but a great way to ride some of the TDU stage. Photo and rest opportunities at the top of the hill with the KOM artwork painted on the road year round.

From here we gradually descend off the ridgeline down into Meadows where the Meadows bakery awaits (I can personally vouch for the finger buns). From here it’s a rolling ride through Paris creek (gorgeous dairy farming country) and down into Strathalbyn (pit stop option).

A steady climb out of Strathalbyn takes you to the highest point of the ride and then as they say it’s all downhill from here. Well kind of. A couple or rolling roads back through the vineyards provide some great views of McLaren vale before we descend back to the hotel.

A great ride on rolling country roads through a variety of scenery.

Shorter option – McLaren Vale to Meadows, return via Kangarilla

Distance: 65.94 km, Climbing: 726m

This ride follows the same route as the longer option through to Meadows. From here we back track briefly (1-2kms) and then make our way towards Kangarilla. The final part of the ride skirts around the top side of McLaren Vale with a couple of small climbs and some great views back across the valley and over the famous wine making region. The difficulty here is avoiding a stop at a cellar door or two!

Day 3 - Sunday, 8th October

McLaren Vale to Bike Society Anzac Highway

Distance: 54.94 km, Climbing: 772m

A flattish ride through McLaren Flat will take the group to Kangarilla and then onto Clarendon. Adelaide Hills riding at its finest through this area. It’s onto the Chandlers Hill climb and up past the Christmas tree farm before a descent into Coromandel Valley. A short climb out of the valley, through Blackwood and onto Belair and Windy Point for some great views (and photos) over Adelaide and out to the coast. Descend down Windy point and back to Bike Society for a well-earned coffee or two!
